Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS Update and Preview of The New System installer

Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS update

The upcoming new version of the Ubuntu 20.04.3 distribution with long-term support is scheduled for release on August 19 (August). The new features of this release will be updates to software packages and the transfer of hardware support to the level of the newer Ubuntu 21.04.

Ubuntu 20.04 LTS was released last year with a Linux 5.4 kernel. This month, users should be given the opportunity to upgrade the kernel to a newer version of Linux 5.11, which will provide better support, especially for newer hardware, add new features and a number of bug fixes. Improvements can also be expected in graphics card support, thanks to updates to the Mesa 21.0 software library and Nvidia card drivers. Similarly, users can again count on patches for security vulnerabilities.

Ubuntu 21.10 new installer

Another interesting feature of Ubuntu is the upcoming system installer, which is already available for testing as part of development installation of the images Ubuntu 21.10 . This installer is based on the Flutter interface and, in addition to the new user interface design, will also offer advanced system configuration options. For example, a new feature will be added to repair an existing Ubuntu installation or the ability to turn off Intel RST (Rapid Storage Technology). At this stage of development, some important functions are still missing, such as setting the data encryption or time zone, but they will definitely be completed in the near future.

The new system installer will probably be part of the Ubuntu 21.10 release, which will be released in about two months with the GNOME 41 desktop environment, the Linux 5.14 kernel and many other new features. However, the developers estimate that they will most likely completely replace Ubiquity in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.
