Discover all the news of the new Ubuntu 22.04

Ubuntu is one of the best Linux distributions that we can find on the net. This is an excellent gateway for all those users who have not tried any Linux distribution before, and a robust, stable system that is faithful to the Linux philosophy for those who are more demanding. Canonical, the company responsible for the development of this OS, usually releases two (controversial) updates a year for this distro. And now it is the turn of the first update of 2022: discover the new Ubuntu 22.04 “Jammy Jellyfish” .

Every 6 months, Canonical releases a new version of Ubuntu in which, in general, it usually updates its packages and includes a new Kernel. These updates have a general support of 9 months, which requires, yes or yes, to update the system at least twice a year. Unless we choose to install an LTS version. These stand out for having a 5-year support, and Canonical releases a new LTS every 2 years. That is, after three normal updates, the fourth is back to LTS.

After the release of Ubuntu 20.04, the last LTS to date, three updates of this distro have already arrived: 20.10, 21.04 and 21.10. Therefore, the new version 22.04 is once again an LTS. It is time to update our systems again.

What’s New in Ubuntu 22.04 “Jammy Jellyfish”

The first of the changes that will catch our attention the most, especially if updated from the previous LTS, is the new GNOME 42 desktop . This new version completely changes many of the general features of GNOME, including, for example, a new activity panel , a application view and keyboard shortcuts to be able to move around the system much better. In addition, it launches a new global dark mode for the entire system, which we can find in the appearance section. And we can also customize the accent color of the system, being able to choose between 10 different ones.

Leaving aside the desktop, we can also find the new Kernel 5.15 . Specifically, it is expected to receive the same version of it that the beta has brought, that is, 5.15.0-23-generic. This version includes a large number of new features and improvements, such as:

  • Better support for NTFS.
  • Increased speed for SAMBA connections, especially with SMB3.
  • Initial support for Apple M1 processors.
  • Improved support for Apple’s Magic Mouse.
  • Nuevo driver Wi-Fi: Realtek RTL8188EU.
  • New power profiles for Acer laptops.
  • EXT4 file system improvements.
  • BTRFS file system improvements.

The main programs and packages that are included by default in the distro have also been updated, such as:

  • Firefox: 98.0.2
  • Thunderbird: 91.8.0
  • LibreOffice: 7.3.2.2
  • Files (Nautilus): 42.0
  • GCC: 11.2.0
  • OpenSSL: 3.0.2

Of course, we could not forget about the new support for this distro, because Ubuntu 22.04 arrives as “LTS”, with a total of 5 years of support and maintenance . Perfect to install it and forget about it until April 2024, when the new LTS arrives.

At the moment, the new Ubuntu 22.04 is only available in beta version. This will allow us to test the system in a virtual machine, or on a test PC, but we do not recommend it for daily use because it can have problems and errors.

To download this distro, or update our old Ubuntu to this new version, we will have to wait another week. Specifically until April 21, the date on which Canonical will launch the new version so that all users interested in it can download and install it.

If you want to try this distro before receiving this new version, we can download both 20.04.4 (LTS) or 21.01 from the Canonical website .
