Fedora Linux 36 was actually supposed to be released on April 19, but the date had to be postponed twice by a week. This is very reminiscent of the old days, when Fedora usually came out a few weeks later than planned. In the last two years, things have gotten much better.
20 years of RHEL and Fedora 36
While the first version of RHEL appeared 20 years ago, Fedora Linux now saw the light of day in the stable version 36. After Ubuntu 22.04, the new Fedora version is the second distribution to ship GNOME 42 as the default desktop for the workstation edition. Unlike Canonical, which ships a customized GNOME Shell, Fedora ships the original. as the kernel, Linux 5.17 Wayland is the master of the sessions.
While Ubuntu, at NVIDIA’s request, removed support for their graphics cards with proprietary drivers very shortly before release, Fedora 36 retains this support. If you have problems with this, you can dodge X11 when registering.
LXQt as official spin
LXQt was added to the ranks of spins as a new desktop variant, which, in addition to GNOME 42 as the standard for the Fedora workstation, already includes desktops such as KDE Plasma 5.24, Xfce 4.16, MATE Compiz, Cinnamon, LXDE, SOAS (Sugar on a Stick) and the i3 Tiling WM offers.
Snapshot handling made easier
A lot has also happened under the hood. In Fedora Linux 36, the RPM database is used by
/moved usr. database Relocating the RPM to
/usr facilitates various types of snapshot and rollback operations. The move to move data to /usr and make /usr a separate subvolume was implemented some time ago for Fedora rpm-ostree , notably Silverblue, Kinoite, CoreOS, and IoT. There rpmdb in
/usr/lib/sysimage. This arrangement has been adopted for Fedora Workstation, so the standard Fedora releases will also be able to take advantage of these features in due course.
No more fbdev
Another change continues the shedding of old habits, where Fedora often leads the way. The kernel’s framebuffer device drivers (fbdev) are no longer shipped. This means that only Direct Rendering Manager (DRM) and Kernel Mode Settings (KMS) are used. This is made possible by the work of SUSE developer Thomas Zimmermann, who contributed the simpledrm driver , which emits the system framebuffer set up by the firmware as a DRM device, even if there is no DRM driver for the device .
The fonts are being switched to Noto as the standard for different languages in order to ensure the consistency of the text display. In terms of software, Fedora largely follows the GNOME specifications and thus also supplies the new GNOME Text Editor instead of the usual Gedit. Otherwise Firefox 99, LibreOffice 7.3, among others, are included.
Plenty of choice
As usual, the new version also pays attention to updating programming languages, tools and applications such as GCC12 and Glibc 2.35Ruby on Rails 7.0, Django 4.0, PHP 8.1.x, PostgreSQL 14. Podman 4.0 also makes its debut in Fedora 36. Fedora 36 Workstation is available for download on GetFedora . spins and labs should not be missing either. Fedora Server and Cloud as well as the spins with alternative desktops for the ARM platform, for the Power architecture and for s390x are listed on their own download page .
