Inkscape 1.2 improves handling of pages and color palettes

After a year of waiting , Inkscape 1.2 has been officially released as stable to continue the evolution of this popular cross-platform vector graphics creation and editing software, which has versions for Linux, Windows and macOS. On this occasion we find some news of interest that we will summarize below.

The first important novelty (or at least it is the first one mentioned in the official announcement) is the possibility of creating “pages of standard or personalized size in the same document” , allowing the user to assign them names, organize them and export them to a large number of formats. , including PDF.

As of Inkscape 1.2, color palettes and swatches can be customized in such a way that they allow their size to be changed, colors to be reconfigured, and switching between different palettes, all in a simple way for the user to adjust them to their workflow. easy.

Continuing with more of the workflow, in this release we find the merging of the layer and object dialogs with the purpose of making things easier when it comes to setting up a document, as well as organizing and quickly finding a specific object in a layer. There are specific icons to help identify object types, and it is possible to customize the object’s layer and colors to enhance the visual environment.

The new live path effect (LPE) for mosaic offers a significant number of new possibilities, so many that those responsible have said that trying them all could be a process that takes days. Of course, in extreme cases it can always be used as a shortcut to quickly copy a large number of objects and create grids, variations and patterns.

In order to make the application a bit more intuitive to use, the “Arrange” option has been added to the “Align and Distribute” dialog. On the other hand, Inkscape 1.2 has received two new adjustment modes on the canvas that facilitate the alignment of objects, although to make use of these features you have to enable the labeling option within the preferences.

Continuing with more of Inkscape 1.2, the new gradient editor aims to improve support on that front and has been placed within the “Fill and Stroke” dialog. In addition to creating gradients, it allows you to assign names and consult the list created/available for the document. Markers at the end of the line are now editable, making it possible to change the distance, orientation, size, and angle of a marker.

The plugins have been updated by the project’s volunteers to make them connect better with version 1.2 of Inkscape and look more polished. There are also some new ones such as the clipart importer , which allows you to search and download resources in SVG format (the default for vector images ) from Wikimedia, Open Clipart and other sources such as the Inkscape community itself.

Finally we have the possibility to export in batches . With this feature, as its name indicates, it is possible to export objects in batches together with the resolution, the name and the format of each selection. It can come in handy for logo creators.

All the details of Inkscape 1.2 are available in the official announcement , while the application for Linux, Windows and macOS is available for download from its corresponding section on the project’s official website. For Linux, a PPA repository for Ubuntu and an AppImage package are available, although Flatpak and Snap can also be used. Aside from rolling release distributions like Arch Linux, it is likely to arrive via standard update to at least Fedora 36.
