Proton 6.3-8 supports DLSS via DirectX 11 and 12

Competition has forced NVIDIA to take better care of the Linux desktop, a market in which it has traditionally swept by idling due to its rivals failing to do better. Luckily, the appearance of FidelityFX Super Resolution and the proximity of dedicated graphics from Intel and XeSS forced the green giant to move forward to bring DLSS to Proton, adopt Wayland standards and even publish as its rescaling technology Open Source .

Now, with the release of Proton 6.3-8 (the latest version of the stable branch), Linux users can officially run DLSS via DirectX 11 and 12 , whose instructions are translated into Vulkan via DXVK and VKD3D respectively. To make use of this support, in the launch parameters of the game you have to put PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command%, while in the file ‘ dxvk.conf ‘ you have to set the option ‘dxgi.nvapiHack’ to False ( dxgi.nvapiHack = False).

Regarding Windows games that use Vulkan natively, such as DOOM Eternal, No Man’s Sky and Wolfenstein: Youngblood, NVIDIA already said at the time that they can make use of DLSS , its well-known supersampling technology supported by Artificial Intelligence. which is responsible for reducing the performance impact caused by ray tracing and opening the door to consolidate 4K and 8K resolutions in PC video games.

Other new features of Proton 6.3-8 include support for an initial set of games that make use of the anti-cheat BattlEye , improved compatibility with Valve’s CEG DRM, support for the latest version of the Steamworks SDK, the fix for a bug that affected Unreal Engine 4 games that use Vulkan as a renderer, the update of DXVK to version 1.9.2-13-g714ca482, from VKD3D to version 2.5-50-g0251b404 and from wine-mono to version 6.4.1. All of that has come along with a handful of fixes for specific games and the launcher from Paradox Interactive.

Despite being a minor release, in Proton 6.3-8 the following games are playable as of now, at least in theory:

  • Age of Empires 4
  • Assassin’s Creed
  • Breath of Death VI
  • Modo monojugador del Call of Duty: Black Ops II (202970)
  • DEATHLOOP
  • FIA European Truck Racing Championship
  • Fly’N
  • Game Dev Tycoon
  • Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered
  • GreedFall
  • Mafia II (classic version)
  • Magicka
  • Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy (solo con gráficas AMD)
  • Mass Effect Legendary Edition (En Mass Effect 1 no funciona el audio)
  • Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom
  • Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Video Game
  • Monster Energy Supercross – The Official Video Game 2

  • RiMS Racing
  • The Riftbreaker
  • Sol Survivor
  • TT Isle of Man Ride on the Edge
  • TT Isle of Man Ride on the Edge 2

Proton 6.3-8 can be easily obtained through the Steam client. In case you are using version 6.3, it should arrive as an update that is applied automatically and that requires restarting the application. This does not remove other ways or compilations that allow to get this release from the compatibility layer, since fortunately it is Open Source.

We recall that Flatpak 1.12 has corrected the bug that affected the application Steam in that format , so if you are using the aforementioned version of the utility in charge of the package format, you can now use the compilations of Proton supplied through the customer.

  1. Hi There,

Just a heads-up that I believe the word “cron” is spelled wrong on your website. I had a couple of errors on my site before I started using a service to monitor for them. There are a few sites that do this but we like SpellingReport.com and ErrorSearch.com.
