The new Kubuntu Focus M2 arrives with Intel Alder Lake and NVIDIA Ampere

Recently appeared The fourth generation of the Kubuntu Focus M2, the latest version of the professional laptop that stands out, as its name suggests, for using the member of the Ubuntu family as a pre-installed system. It is a top of the range equipment aimed at professionals, so its price is not low. In addition, it is offered with NVIDIA graphics under KDE Plasma and Xorg, which increases the chances of not having a good desktop experience.

Despite being an apparently very underground, it seems to have enough sales to stay alive and be recycled with new generations. The fact of betting on an operating system with KDE Plasma gives it a certain character of its own in a panorama clearly dominated by GNOME through Ubuntu, RHEL, Pop!_OS and more recently Fedora, which at least reared its head two years ago across some ThinkPad models .

Regarding the equipment that concerns us in this entry, the fourth generation of the Kubuntu Focus M2 incorporates an Intel Core i7-12700H as a processor. At the graphics level, it allows to choose between an NVIDIA RTX 3060 with 6GB of VRAM, an 8GB RTX 3070 Ti and a 16GB RTX 3080 Ti. The commitment to the green giant’s GPUs is to allow work in sectors such as artificial intelligence, where the company enjoys a clear position of dominance. To finish with the graphics section, the screen works at a native resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels and a frequency of 165Hz.

In terms of memory, at the RAM level, configurations with 16, 32 and 64 gigabytes at 3,200MHz are made available , while for storage we start with a Samsung NVMe SSD with 500GB that can be replaced by another 1TB or 2TB. It is possible to add a second NVMe SSD of the same brand, speed, and storage capacity options. Disk encryption is offered by default, but you can choose not to include it in the purchase process.

As for external connections, we find a Thunderbolt 4 + USB Type-C port, an HDMI, a mini DisplayPort 1.4, a mini DisplayPort 1.4 over USB Type-C (reversible) 3.2 Gen 2, two USB Type-A (rectangular) 3.2 Gen 1, a 3.5mm jack port for headphones and microphone, another 3.5mm jack port for microphone and optical S/PDIF output, a Kensington lock and an SSD/MMC card reader.

In terms of connectivity through the network, the fourth generation of Kubuntu Focus M2 incorporates an RJ45 port for Gigabit Ethernet and Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 + Bluetooth. The webcam is 2 megapixels, the dimensions of the equipment are 358 x 240 x 24 millimeters and its weight is about 2.4 kilograms. The battery is 80Wh and is capable of offering 6.5 hours of autonomy with the integrated graphics and configuring the screen brightness at a medium-low level and 3.5 hours with the dedicated graphics and the brightness at the same level. The operating system is Kubuntu 22.04 LTS with KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS.

The fourth generation Kubuntu Focus M2 can be purchased (if it covers more than the US and Canada market) from the team’s official website at the base price of US$1,895. Obviously, the price will go up as the characteristics of the unit to be purchased are improved.
